“The Super Speedway of the West” will kick off its 64th year of operation on Saturday March 31st, at the historic track with some new additions. For the first time in over 40 years, the classic 3/8th mile oval was repaved last October.
“We’re really looking forward to kicking off the season. The excitement for the new surface has been the buzz in the racing community with lots of new and returning drivers. We’re anticipating some of our biggest car counts in years”, said Evergreen Speedway President Doug Hobbs. “Fans will definitely want to be here on opening night because it’s going to be so exciting with wheel to wheel racing on the new surface. We’ve had several teams practice on the track and we expect to see a lot of new track records. Our season opener blends the best of NASCAR with thrill of Figure 8s, Bus Racing and huge Fireworks Show!”
The night will also feature excitement off the track with many Northwest Sports Legends on hand, including Sonics Legend Slick Watts, Seahawks Legend Chris Warren, Seahawks and Husky Legend Lawyer Milloy, Huskies Basketball Star Donald Watts and Seahawks Legend Joe Tafoya. Gates open at 2 with family friendly vendors and activities, including an Easter Egg hunt for kids. Discounted $12 tickets are available until March 15th. Kids 10 and under are always free.
Evergreen Speedway’s NASCAR season opener is expected to see over 30 Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Model teams from throughout the Northwest. The field will feature elite drivers and champions with many of the past track champions in action including 2017 Champion Trenton Moriarity, 5-time Champion Naima Lang, 2013 Champion Daniel Moore, 2-time Champion Mike Holden and 2-time Champion Shane Harding. Other champions include 2017 Northwest Super Late Model Series Champion Brittney Zamora as she embarks on a 2018 NASCAR Rookie of the Year campaign, seven -time Northwest Touring Late Model Champion Garrett Evans, four-time Evergreen Speedway Street Stock Champion Roger Drake, will move up to the Super Late Model ranks, and 2016 Street Stock Champion Chad Fitzpatrick will begin his sophomore year in the Super Late Models.
Opening night will also feature the Monroe Grocery Outlet Super Stock Figure 8 division in action. The “One Armed Bandit”, Quenton Borreson, will be attempting his fifth straight Championship which will be a tough task with many returning drivers including Doug Delfel, Brian Little, Mackenzie Deitz, Eric Allison and many more.
Interstate Batteries Hornet Division will once again produce a full field of cars with 40 drivers expected on opening night, with several new rookies. The division will crown a new champion as two-time defending champ Dawson Cox moves up to Street Stocks. The small four cylinder cars feature some of the biggest fields throughout the year, as they navigate the tricky road course and sharp boot track.
The Figure 8 track will see double duty as the Buzz Inn Stinger 8s make their debut. Many new faces will be on hand to try their luck at the “Most Dangerous Intersection on the Planet”. Past winners, including Jason Wilson, Zach Bristol and Jaime Corbett will be chasing a championship. The night will be capped off with chaos and carnage in the fan favorite School Bus Figure 8 race and Mini Bump-2-Pass class. The night will be capped off with a Huge Fireworks Show.
