60 Minutes of FEAR Recap and MyLaps Link

The 60 Minutes of FEAR highlighted an exciting night of racing last Saturday night at Evergreen Speedway, with the defending champion in the Outlaw Figure 8 division surviving more than 140 laps to achieve his first victory in this legendary race.

The race was actually two races in one, as the Monroe Grocery Outlet Super Stock Figure 8 division joined the field with the Outlaws. Nick Gunderson led the first 19 laps until 4-time winner of the 60 Minutes of FEAR, Rick Deitz took over the lead and built up a healthy lead until a caution at lap 39. As the laps went up and the clock was counting down, Steve Cox assumed the lead when the 76 of Deitz broke a right front spindle ending his night. Cox held the lead until lap 111 when Cox and Doug Delfel collided hard in the intersection. Both drivers got out of their cars when the red flag stopped the race. Cox’s #7 Outlaw car was done for the night. Delfel took a walk around his car, got back in and joined the field. “Both these cars did exactly what they were designed to do when hit like they were” Steve Cox said after the race. “My car was hit in the left front and with the way these things are designed, kind of collapsed in on itself. Delfel’s car is built so strong and protected in the right places, so he was able to carry on”

Race winner Steltz took the lead on lap 131 and never looked back Doug Wilkinson finished 2nd and Zach Larson finished 3rd. In the Monroe Grocery Outlet Super Stock Figure 8 division, 2-Time Champion and 2015 points leader Quentin Borreson took his #17 Ford to the winners stage with Steve Peters in 2nd and a returning Greg Scott finishing 3rd.  The win for Steltz made Evergreen Speedway history, as Mike’s brother Ron Steltz won the race in 1997 making them the first brother combination to win the 60 Minutes of FEAR.

In the Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Model 75 lap main event, Jeff Knight set fast time in qualifying. Several teams took advantage of the nice weather and return to the Speedway to race, including Tom Hughes in his 48 car, John Bender was fast in his #18 car and Naima Lang blew the dust off his 00 car to get tuned up for the upcoming Galloway 150 Shootout on May 23rd.

The 6 car invert put 2nd year driver Brandon Scheiber on the pole. Scheiber led the first 9 laps until a restart from a caution allowed John Bender to take over the lead. Several caution flags later Naima Lang assumed the lead with Jeff Knight maintaining a 2-3 car distance from Lang’s rear bumper. As the laps wound down, lapped traffic really came into play. Knight followed Lang through the traffic until he found a hole and took advantage of the opening to take the lead and the win. Lang recovered for 2nd and Brandon Scheiber finished 3rd.

The Northwest Vintage Modifieds returned to Evergreen Speedway for a 30 lap main event. Bobby Wheeler Jr. won the main with Robert Rux and Mike Clother finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Buzz Inn Steakhouse Stinger 8’s put on a great 30 lap main, with young Branden Lindberg taking the lead at lap 3 and wasn’t threatened for the rest of the race. Branden paid tribute his father Malcom “The Maniac” Lindberg with a flamed white paint job.
