2018 Evergreen Cup: Big Money Figure 8 Race and NW Hornet Nationals
There has been a lot of buzz in the air for the newest event in the Evergreen Speedway schedule as the 2018 Evergreen Cup will cap off the season. The new Evergreen Cup will feature one of the biggest Figure 8 races on the west coast with the winner walking away with $5,000.
The 150-lap Open Comp Figure 8 feature will be on October 6th and will attract drivers from all over that will be aiming to take home the big money. The event will pay $200 to start plus added incentives and complimentary Hotel rooms for drivers outside the state of Washington.
“We are excited to wrap up the 2018 regular season with a huge night featuring five outstanding classes including the First Annual Evergreen Cup. Featuring the best of the best in Figure Eight Racing,” said Evergreen Speedway President Doug Hobbs. ” With all of the division titles already decided, this should be a wild night and surely to be one of the best nights of the year.”
Figure 8 drivers from Evergreen Speedway have traveled to big races across the country like California or Indianapolis but now 2017 Outlaw Figure 8 Champion Chris Curtis is looking forward to having the big event at his home track.
“I can’t put into words how excited my team is to have a big race like this at our home track. Being part of this inaugural race really means a lot to me. I hope that this race continues for many years to come!!,” said Curtis. “We have our Figure 8 Nationals that used to be 100 plus cars trying to make a 30-car field and I can see this race being just like that in the future. I say bring on the cars from Indy, California, Florida and Kentucky, let’s see if you guys got what it takes at the most dangerous intersection in the NW!!”
The event will also showcase bonus money for Super Stock Figure 8 cars with two $500 bonuses, one for the highest finishing car on 10” Hoosiers and one for the highest finishing car on 8” Towel City Retreads. All cars must meet 2018 Evergreen Speedway Super Stock Figure 8 rules to qualify for bonus money.
The first ever Northwest Hornet Nationals will also be at the 2018 Evergreen Cup. The race will be a $1,000 to win Hornet open race with some exciting additions. The race will be run a course that will be created just for the event. Qualifying for the event will be exciting, as it will be similar to a big time Super Late Model race with qualifying, qualifying heats and features.
“Staging the Interstate Batteries NW Hornet Nationals on the final night will attract not only the stars of Evergreen Speedway but should attract some of the best Hornet drivers in the State,” added Hobbs. “We could see record numbers of cars for this event.”
Toby Jenkins has won some of the biggest Hornet races at Evergreen Speedway over the past few seasons and the Northwest Hornet Nationals caught his attention.
“It’s really exciting news to see Evergreen Speedway put on a race like this for the Hornet class. I’ve been racing in the Stinger 8 and Hornet class since 2014, and this is by far the biggest race this track has put on for the Hornet Division,” said Jenkins. “You can bet that Jenkins Motorsport plans on bringing at least 2 cars to this event, and we look forward to hopefully bringing home the first trophy from this prestigious event!”
The Evergreen Cup will start with a Friday night open practice on October 5th for all classes racing on Saturday. The 150-lap Evergreen Cup Figure 8 Open Comp will highlight the action on Saturday October 6th with the Northwest Hornet Nationals, Stinger 8 and the Washington Midget Racing Association will top off a jam-packed night.
Drivers traveling from outside the state of the Washington for the Evergreen Cup are encouraged to contact Evergreen Speedway to set up hotel accommodations.
